The Five Second Rule
I find it necessary to address the five second rule. I believe that there are situations in which the five second rule can not apply. Basically anywhere outside. It a food item should fall on cement, asphalt, a planting bed, etc. It should be immediately disposed of no matter how long it was there.
So, hypothetically, if a hot dog falls off a plate onto grass (no matter how recently that grass has been cut) it can not be placed back on the grill and then onto the plate with the other hot dogs.
Incidentally, I had a roommate that believed the "five second rule" had a factual scientific basis....she was a fine arts major.

Five second rule should not apply in any circumstances. Your food sitting on a toilet seat for five seconds picks up less germs than falling on anything other than a freshly sanitised food contact surface. (That's because toilet seats are made with ultra-san plastic which kills germs!) Incidently Plastic cutting boards are the WORST things to use... use wood. Wood cutting boards absorb water (which germs need to live) so they start killing germs in less than 30 seconds. Water pools on a plastic board and can keep germs alive for 4 - 5 minutes.
hope I haven't turned you off food (hehe) P.S. anything with a lot of sugar in it kills germs (because sugar absorbs water ergo see wooden cutting boards above!)
